Greetings from Luray Caverns!
Yes, this was the first attraction which we visited in VA. Virginia is place of many cavers, but Luray is best.
Yes, this was the first attraction which we visited in VA. Virginia is place of many cavers, but Luray is best.
Day 2 of our VA trip started with a full course breakfast at McDonalds. McDonalds was the nearby food giant from our hotel ( we stayed at Bultimore Hotel Holiday Inn) and we wanted to finish the breakfast part as soon as possible so that we can have the more of Virginia.
We reached there at around 12 pm and booked the ticket ($24/ head). It was a long queue because of long weekend. But, we were not bored. And, the credit goes to the anonymous musician! Boy, what a musician he is. I was literally thinking of record the music and published it in Youtube.
Point to noted here : You can always book your ticket online, it is always a time saver. But, if you couldn't like us, then you can do what we did. Two of us stood in the queue for Luray Caverns entry, and two of us went to book the tickets. So, it saved time.
Formed with stalactites, stalagmites and columns, Luray Cave is one of the best commercial cave of USA. I was literally spellbound after entering into cave. It was spectacular, Man!
Fish Market (Stalactites deposited and formed like fishes)
Totem Poles (you can see these sculptures when you will walk through the pave-way)
Dream Lake (This is a lake and what you are seeing is the reflection of the above stalactites!)
Pluto's Chasm ( This is the main horizontal column which is 500 ft long)
Saracen's Tent (Stalactites and Stalagmites deposited and formed like a tent here)
Collection of money in Dream lake, where you can throw coins and make a wish. Each year, the donated the collected money to these above organization.
Frozen Mountain (It was formed due to the water dripping through the ceiling since last 1000 years)
Stalacpipe Organ (The most spectacular thing. The wires of this instrument resonate through the sculptures and create some haunting tune)
Foods and Gifts : Luray Cave has it's own food court where you can enjoy sandwich, fries, soups (all in veg and non-veg) and also the beverages. We had Chicken sandwich and nacho with cheesy dip.
Grab a memento from Luray Gift shop. If you want to gift something to your loved ones, then Luray magnet or a show-piece are good choices.
The view around Luray cave is breathtaking. You can enjoy roaming around and have a glimpse through observatory point.
How to go : If you are in East-coast, then you can go Virginia by car like us. It took max 7/8 hours from CT. If you are not, then you can go for gotobus.com or something similar. They offer various tours in and around VA which is affordable and time-saving.
Places to stay : You will find plenty affordable options within few miles like Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn, Ramada etc.
Best time to visit : Though the temperature inside cave is 54 degree F(12 degree C) throughout the year, but, best time to visit this attraction is from May to October.

I'm not a huge caving fan, but this was impressive. And I love how they donate the money to charitable organizations.
